Dr. Donaldson and Dr. Sieffert are Diplomates of the American Board of Plastic Surgery. This means that after college, medical school, general surgery residency, plastic surgery residency and fellowship, they passed both written and oral examinations administered by the nation’s top plastic surgery professors and instructors.
The written exam completed by Dr. Donaldson and Dr. Sieffert is a culmination of their many years of education, consisting of 400 questions over seven hours. The oral exam, taken at least one year later, consists of two days of 2-examiners-on-1-examinee interrogation about actual and hypothetical plastic surgery cases and scenarios. Fewer than 200 surgeons in the nation satisfactorily complete this process each year.
There is tremendous confusion about who is Board Certified, and if so, then by which “board.” All boards are not the same. Some are obtainable simply by paying an annual fee or attending a weekend course!
There are 24 medical boards that are recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS), a governing body that has protected standards and assisted in the ongoing evaluation and certification of physicians since 1933. Of these boards, the only one related to plastic surgery is the American Board of Plastic Surgery.
Examples of terms and specialties that are NOT recognized as boards by the ABMS: cosmetic surgery, cosmetic medicine, laser surgery, liposuction surgery, dermatologic surgery, facial plastic surgery, ophthalmic plastic surgery, aesthetic surgery, aesthetic medicine.
There are physicians in Columbus, Ohio who offer plastic surgical procedures even though they are Board Certified in Emergency Medicine, Family Practice, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, Dermatology or Obstetrics and Gynecology — and some are not Board Certified at all!
